Reflection of Semester One

Reflection of Semester One

Overall my experience of the first semester was enjoyable and showed me a valuable insight to what the next three years will have to offer. The Wednesday lectures were a new learning curve for me and taught me to see other artist's practices in a new way. Even though after the first lecture the following weren’t as inspiring to me, I realised after that they all had different concepts to what art is, than my own. I accepted this and still found their practices interesting, but just not for me. For example, we have had some artists that experiment with live performances, sound and video, which isn’t beneficial to my practice as my comfort zone is more physical art like painting. However, this doesn’t mean that I didn't learnt anything from them. For instance, Jade Montserrat showed me to base my topics off more controversial subjects because then you’ll be more involved and passionate, likewise creating a better piece. Meanwhile I wasn’t fond of the appearance of her work but still understood that it was hard and laborious to complete. This developed my own practice because I chose to do the topics of crime and death within my carousel project. I still feel that my skill level is the same and the style isn’t different, but I have learnt that my work is more 3 dimensional than the 2D I thought it was after the Friday discussions of presenting work. I have started to notice from feedback that some of my previous experiments are still inspiring me now. In this semester I aim to improve upon my analysis and critical skills and to show more of my own work and the processes that I am exploring.
